Discover the history, uses and types of crystal balls. Learn how to scry, choose your first crystal ball, and use it for meditation and spiritual development.
A crystal ball is more than a Hollywood cliché. For thousands of years, polished spheres of quartz, glass, and crystal have been used for scrying, meditation, and spiritual development. Whether you’re a practising witch, a meditation enthusiast, or simply drawn to their beauty, a crystal ball can be a powerful tool for inner work.
Crystal balls are simply spheres of clear or coloured crystal, glass, or stone, polished to a high sheen. They come in various sizes — from palm-sized spheres that fit in your hand to large centrepiece pieces that command attention on your altar or desk. But their real magic lies in what they represent and how they’re used.

Scrying — the practice of gazing into a reflective surface to receive visions — is one of humanity’s oldest spiritual practices. Ancient cultures used water in bowls, polished obsidian mirrors, and even oil surfaces for divination. The Roman author Pliny the Elder wrote about crystal balls as early as the 1st century CE.
In ancient Greece, priests and priestesses gazed into pools of water at Delphi and other oracular sites. The famous Oracle at Delphi entered a trance state and delivered prophecies — a practice that continued for over a thousand years.
During the Middle Ages, crystal balls were associated with scholars and mystics. The famous English scholar John Dee (1527-1608) used a crystal ball in his spiritual work, claiming it allowed him to communicate with angels. His collection of scrying tools — including a black obsidian mirror brought from Mexico by Cortes — is now in the British Museum.
Crystal balls also appear in Renaissance art and literature. They were symbols of wisdom, foresight, and magical power. Queen Elizabeth I had her own court astrologer, and crystal balls were prized objects among the nobility.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the crystal ball became closely associated with circus fortune-tellers, gypsy imagery, and Hollywood. Hollywood films cemented the image: a turbaned psychic, dim candlelight, a crystal ball on a velvet cloth. While this popular image has its charm, it overshadows the deeper spiritual practice behind crystal ball scrying.
The traditional choice. Natural clear quartz crystal is prized for its clarity, energy-amplifying properties, and natural beauty. Genuine quartz crystal balls are more expensive but carry the energy of the earth.
High-quality optical glass crystal balls are a more affordable option. They’re perfectly clear, lightweight, and ideal for beginners. Many professional scryers actually prefer glass because it has fewer internal imperfections that can distract from the visionary state.
From deep purple amethyst to smoky quartz, coloured crystal balls add their own energy to the practice. Rose quartz balls bring loving energy; black obsidian balls are grounding and protective. Our angel number crystal balls — in clear quartz with etched numbers — are a popular modern take.

Choose a quiet, dimly lit room. Position your crystal ball on a cloth or stand so it’s at eye level when you sit comfortably. Use soft, diffused light — candlelight is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight or harsh electric light, which creates distracting reflections.
Most beginners don’t see dramatic visions right away. The first experiences are usually more subtle:
Don’t be discouraged if nothing dramatic happens at first. Scrying is a skill that develops with practice. Think of it like learning to meditate — the more you do it, the easier it becomes.
Even if you never use it for scrying, a beautiful crystal ball makes a stunning addition to your home. On a wooden stand, it catches the light and creates a focal point on a shelf, altar, or coffee table.
Many people keep crystal balls on their desk or meditation table simply as a reminder of spiritual practice. They’re also popular as:

With so many options, how do you choose? Here’s what to consider:
If you’re just starting, a good-quality glass ball is perfectly fine. Once you’re confident in your practice, you might want to invest in a natural quartz crystal ball. The difference is in the energy and the craftsmanship.
Always use a stand. Crystal balls roll — they’re spherical! A wooden or metal stand holds your ball securely and looks beautiful. Many of our crystal balls come with a decorative wooden stand included.
“I was so nervous about my first crystal ball but it arrived beautifully packaged. The 8cm size is perfect for my small altar. I use it for 10 minutes every morning before meditation. I haven’t had dramatic visions yet, but I do feel calmer and more centred after gazing at it.” — Lisa M., London
“The 666 crystal ball is stunning. I was drawn to it because I kept seeing 666 everywhere. The number is etched beautifully and the crystal itself is high quality. It sits on my desk and I find myself gazing at it when I’m thinking. It’s become a little talisman.” — Rachel P., Manchester
“Bought the set of angel number balls as a gift for my spiritual daughter. She was over the moon. The different numbers are so thoughtful and the wooden stands are lovely quality. Definitely worth the price.” — Margaret H., York
A crystal ball is one of the most iconic spiritual tools you can own. Whether you’re drawn to scrying, meditation, or simply the beauty of a polished sphere, there’s a crystal ball waiting for you.
