What Does the Green Man Represent?
The Green Man is one of the most enduring figures in European folklore. He appears in churches, cathedrals, and folk art dating back centuries. Symbolising spring, renewal, and the untamed power of nature, he is a reminder of our deep connection to the natural world. For modern pagans and witches, the Green Man is often seen as the male counterpart to the Goddess – representing the Horned God and the energy of the forest.

The History of the Green Man
The Green Man motif dates back to ancient times, with examples found in Roman, Celtic, and Hindu art. During the Middle Ages, he appeared as a architectural carving on churches across Europe. The figure typically takes three forms: the leaf face (made entirely of foliage), the disgorging face (leaves pouring from the mouth), and the gazing face (leaves growing from the eyes and mouth).
