Learn pendulum dowsing for beginners. How to use a pendulum, calibrate yes/no, ask questions, and choose the right pendulum for divination.
Pendulum dowsing is one of the simplest and most powerful divination tools available. A weighted object on a chain or string — usually a crystal, metal, or glass pendant — held between your fingers. The pendulum moves in response to your subconscious mind, your energy field, and the subtle energies around you.
For thousands of years, pendulums have been used for finding water, diagnosing illness, making decisions, and communicating with the spiritual realm. Today, pendulum dowsing is practised by witches, healers, and spiritual seekers worldwide. It’s simple to learn, requires no special equipment, and can give you answers to yes/no questions in seconds.

Dowsing — the practice of using a rod or pendulum to find hidden things — dates back to ancient Egypt. Egyptian tombs depict figures holding pendulum-like objects. The ancient Chinese used pendulums for divination as early as 2200 BCE.
In medieval Europe, dowsers used forked sticks to find water and minerals. The pendulum version became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially in France and Germany. The famous French dowser Abbe Mermoz used pendulums to diagnose illness and find underground water sources.
In the 20th century, pendulum dowsing was adopted by the spiritualist and New Age movements. It became a standard tool for healing, chakra balancing, and communication with spirit guides. Today, pendulum kits are a staple in every witch’s cupboard.
The pendulum works through a phenomenon called ideomotor response. Your subconscious mind causes tiny, unconscious muscle movements that move the pendulum. When you ask a question, your higher self or intuition responds through these subtle movements.
Think of it as a bridge between your conscious mind and your subconscious. Your conscious mind might overthink a question, but your subconscious — connected to your intuition and spiritual guidance — knows the answer. The pendulum simply makes that answer visible.
Sit comfortably with your elbow on a table. Hold the pendulum chain between your thumb and forefinger — about 15-20cm from the pendulum itself. Let the pendulum hang still. Take three deep breaths to centre yourself.
Before asking questions, establish what “yes” and “no” look like. Ask the pendulum:
Do this a few times until you’re clear on the signals. Everyone’s pendulum moves differently — there’s no “right” way.
Ask simple yes/no questions. Be specific and clear. For example: “Is it in my highest good to accept this job offer?” Not “What should I do with my life?”
Wait for the pendulum to settle into its movement. Don’t force or guide it. Trust what you see.
Keep a pendulum journal. Write down your questions and the answers you receive. Over time, you’ll learn to trust your pendulum and notice patterns.

“Is it in my highest good to move to London?” “Should I take this job?” Pendulums are excellent for helping you make choices when your mind is torn.
Hold the pendulum over each of your seven chakras. It will spin clockwise (open/balanced) or counter-clockwise (blocked/imbalanced). A common pendulum use for energy healers.
Hold the pendulum over different crystals. It will move more strongly over the crystals you need right now.
Ask questions about your spirit guides, past lives, or spiritual path. The pendulum can help you connect with guidance from beyond.
Made from natural crystals — clear quartz, amethyst, rose quartz, obsidian. Each crystal carries its own energy. Clear quartz is the most versatile for beginners.
Brass, copper, or silver pendulums. Metal conducts energy well and is durable. Often shaped like a teardrop or cone.
Complete sets that include the pendulum, a mat with yes/no/maybe markings, a pouch, and instructions. Perfect for beginners. Our Black Cat and Luna Moth pendulum kits are popular choices.
Start simple. Don’t try to solve the meaning of life in your first session. Start with small questions.
Be specific. Vague questions get vague answers. “Should I buy the blue candle?” not “Should I buy candles?”
Trust but verify. If you get an answer you’re unsure about, wait a few hours and ask again.
Don’t ask what you already know. If you already know the answer, your conscious mind will influence the pendulum.
Cleanse your pendulum. Use it only for spiritual work, not games. Cleanse it under moonlight or with sage regularly.

“The black cat pendulum kit is so beautifully presented. It comes with everything you need — the pendulum, the mat, a pouch, and instructions. I was a complete beginner and picked it up in minutes. The pendulum movements are surprisingly clear. I use it daily for guidance.” — Sophie L., London
“The luna moth design is stunning. I’ve had pendulums before but this one feels different — I get much clearer movements. The quality is excellent and the chain is the perfect length. Highly recommend.” — Hannah B., Brighton
“I bought the opalite pendulum as a gift for my witchy friend and she loves it. The opalite is so pretty and catches the light. She says the pendulum is very responsive. Great gift for spiritual seekers.” — Clare W., Manchester
