The Seven Chakras Explained: Crystals, Colours and Candles for Each Chakra

A clear beginner's guide to the seven chakras — what each one governs, the colours and crystals associated with it, and simple ways to work with them at home.

What Are the Chakras?

In yogic and spiritual traditions, chakras are described as seven energy centres running from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. Each is associated with a colour, a set of qualities, and — in modern crystal practice — particular stones. You don’t have to hold any particular belief to find the framework useful; many people use it simply as a way to check in with different areas of life.

Working with One Chakra at a Time

The most common beginner mistake is trying to work on all seven at once. Pick one — usually whichever feels most relevant right now — and keep it simple for two or three weeks.

  1. Choose the chakra. Feeling ungrounded? Root. Struggling to say what you mean? Throat.
  2. Bring in the colour. A candle, a piece of clothing, or simply a coloured cloth on your altar.
  3. Add the crystal. Hold it during a few minutes of quiet, or keep it on your desk.
  4. Set one intention. One sentence, present tense. Write it down.

Using Candles for Chakra Work

Colour-coded candles are the simplest way to bring the system into a daily routine. Light the candle that matches your chosen chakra for ten minutes while you journal or sit quietly. Scented candles layer nicely here too — lavender and chamomile for calm, frankincense for grounding, citrus for energy. Our guide to candle colours and their meanings goes deeper on this.

A Simple Weekly Practice

  • Monday: Root — five minutes grounding, feet on the floor, red candle.
  • Wednesday: Solar plexus — one small thing you’ve been avoiding.
  • Friday: Heart — one message sent to someone you appreciate.
  • Sunday: Third eye or crown — journal, then rest.

Keep it light. Consistency matters far more than length, and a practice you actually repeat beats an elaborate one you abandon.

Chakra Sets vs Individual Stones

A seven-stone chakra set gives you the whole system in one purchase and looks good laid out. Individual stones suit people who already know which area they want to work on. If you’re buying your first set, get the boxed version — it keeps them together and stops the smaller pieces disappearing into a drawer.

Cleansing and Care

Stones picked up frequently benefit from a regular reset. Moonlight overnight is the gentlest method; smudging with sage or palo santo is quicker. Our crystal healing guide covers choosing and cleansing in detail, and if you’re setting up a dedicated space, the beginner’s altar guide shows how to lay one out.
